The COVID-19 Pandemic Has Effected the Mental Health of Healthcare Providers

A study conducted in part by University of Utah researchers has revealed the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the study, over 50% of doctors, nurses, and first responders have struggled with mental health problems because of work conditions related to the outbreak. The study’s lead researcher described the healthcare environment in recent months as “akin to domestic combat” and is hopeful that an understanding of this impact will lead to services and supports for healthcare professionals.

In April, we are sponsoring a training series that provides healthcare providers with tools that can reinforce resilience in the face of difficult patient interactions and stressful clinical work environments. What Have We Learned About Screening for Social Determinants of Health?
Increased access to wellness is about more than just high-quality healthcare, it is about understanding the social and economic determinants of health including access to housing, nutritious food, childcare, and transportation. How healthcare providers access information about these factors has been a rapidly developing area of healthcare systems building. Screening tools, like the Accountable Health Communities Model, have been created and modified to increase the communication between patients and their doctors and to facilitate the development of resources, referral processes, and care coordination to address the results of patient screening.

Barriers to screening continue to exist and the healthcare community has continued to learn about how to navigate care that includes social determinants. In a national survey of hospitals, providers revealed the barriers that they face screening patients for social needs including discomfort about topics they feel may be sensitive, lack of time, lack of systems to track social needs data, and a perceived lack of resources for post-screening referrals (1). But, as screening continues in area hospitals and clinics, providers are learning how to overcome these barriers and to use both the screening process and screening data to provide more empathetic and comprehensive patient care. Learning communities throughout Colorado contribute to this growth and learning.

Health Equity: LGBTQ+ Online Course (Mar. 31st-May 19th)

This six-week online learning experience approaches the issue of LGBTQ+ health from multiple perspectives. It will provide information and an opportunity for personal reflection, and ends with an introduction to action steps public health and health care can take to improve health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Speak My Culture: Trust, Culture, and COVID-19 in the Latino Community Webcast

This one hour Speak My Culture webcast presented by Tamara Rios, Ph.D of Rios Associates, addresses the health challenges within the Latino patient community. Rios Associates has been the instructor for the annual CHAMPS Spanish Language for Health Care Professionals training for over thirty years and we are honored to learn from their expertise with this opportunity. Participants do not need to speak Spanish to take this training! This webcast is perfect for those health center staff who would like to build rapport and trust with their Latino patients in an efficient manner. At this online event, participants will obtain tips, tools, and strategies to be better equipped in providing culturally appropriate and sensitive care to Latino patients, focusing on COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, and telemedicine.

Adolescent Reproductive Health For Primary Care Providers

This series offers clinically relevant topics for primary care providers who provide or are looking to build, expand, and improve care to preteens through young adults. Once completed, participants will be able to evaluate and manage common conditions in adolescent reproductive health. Over the course of six sessions, the series will include an overview of adolescent reproductive health issues, best practices in adolescent contraception and common adolescent gynecology concerns.

As part of our dedication to supporting, educating, and empowering Colorado’s LGBTQ+ community, Envision:You is seeking two Peer Community Organizers, one to serve Southeast Colorado and another to serve the Southwest area of the state. The Peer Support Community Organizer will serve as a mentor, model, advocate, and motivator for local LGBTQ+ community members by facilitating Envision:You Peer Support Program workshops.
The Envision:You Peer Support Program is a series of psycho educational workshops created to foster relationship building, reduce stigma, and empower LGBTQ+ folks in these targeted areas.

The Communications Director is responsible for the management of the Communications division's goals, budget, staff, policies, procedures and legal compliance. The incumbent will establish and implement the annual strategic health communication and marketing plan with an emphasis on building the SJBPH brand. The Communications Director serves as the Lead Public Information Officer and responds to Colorado Open Records Act requests. In addition, the incumbent crafts and distributes both internal and external communications messages, including public service announcements, media releases, newsletters, presentations and the agency's Annual Report. The Communications Director collaborates with community partners on common external communications messages. A bachelor's degree in a related field and seven years of experience related to area of assignment, including two years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above are required. Benefits for exempt employees and non-exempt employees, 80% or more, are Medical Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Flexible Spending Account, Employee Assistance Program, Wellness Program, Paid Time Off, Retirement Plan, Life Insurance and Supplemental Insurance. The Social Services Manager is responsible for developing and leading the outreach and enrollment team in improving client services in accessing healthy equity programs and defining client growth. The manager will support the outreach and enrollment team; assist clients with insurance enrollments and completion of applications for financial assistance. The manager will oversee day-to-day operations; train the field team of outreach and enrollment coordinators; establish relationships and communicate regularly with stakeholders; promote programs; improve team productivity; and increase client participation.

The Behavioral Health Care Coordinator (BHCC) links people in San Miguel County to available behavioral health treatment and mental wellness promotion resources. At the same time, the Coordinator advocates on behalf of clients, helps clients navigate the behavioral health system and resources, and coordinates referrals to ensure a streamlined experience for clients. When barriers to care are experienced, the BHCC will assist clients in overcoming obstacles faced in accessing or receiving services needed to maintain well-being and independence through direct services or referrals to other community resources. The BHCC will also provide cross-agency and systems coordination, partner with various behavioral health resources throughout the region, and develop and implement strategies to effectively market and advertise these resources.
