SWCAHEC NEWS!
|
|
We are thrilled to report that the 2022-23 HOPE Program - Health Occupations Promoting Equity is off to a great start! With already three out of six sessions complete, Colorado high school students gained free health career exploration experience and knowledge of current and emerging health issues in the state of Colorado. Through the program, participants virtually join in monthly, live sessions where fellow Colorado Area Health Education Centers present on health topics.
In November, Front Range AHEC presented on the topic Enhancing Health Equity and Reducing Health Disparities which focus on several populations, including undocumented individuals, undocumented students, rural populations, and refugees. Participants learned to define the concept of health equity and health disparities, identify the social determinants of health, and analyze how social determinants of health contribute to health disparities. They also heard personal experiences regarding the topic from Okany Rivas and Albert Majaliwa.
Students who attend the monthly sessions can apply at the COAHEC HOPE Institute
It is a free week-long event during which students experience healthcare education first-hand on the CU Anschutz Medical Center.
We continue to invite all Colorado high school students to take advantage of these unique opportunities and to join us next month for our topic The Influence of Culture: healing Health Disparities in Native Americans presented by Southwestern Colorado AHEC.
