In mid-February, Southwestern Colorado AHEC and the Indigenous Wellbriety Program hosted a virtual session of the 2022-23 HOPE Program (https://swcahec.org/coahec-hope-program/ ). Chelsie Begoody, Dyllon Mills, Luis Ramirez, Imo Succo, MSW, and Sammy Antez Jr. co-presented the Influence of Culture: Healing Health Disparities in Native Americans. Over thirty high school students statewide participated in the session to learn about cultural humility, and how awareness about Native American culture can help improve health. The students also gained insight into how Native American culture can help reduce health disparities and substance use addiction in Southwestern Colorado, as well as gain a better understanding of the native food system. The HOPE Program is a free health career exploration experience that provides knowledge on current and emerging health issues in Colorado and continue into April.
Students who attend the monthly sessions can apply at the COAHEC HOPE Institute (https://swcahec.org/coahec-hope-program-institute/ ). It is a free week-long event during which students experience healthcare education first-hand on the CU Anschutz Medical Center.
We continue to invite all Colorado high school students to take advantage of these unique opportunities and to join us next month for topic Oral Health including Health Equity presented by Southeastern Colorado AHEC.
