Southwest Colorado Area Health Education Center
received an award at the Governor's Residence in Denver

Rusty Connor and Kathleen McInnis accepted an award for Excellence in Apprenticeship on behalf of the SW Colorado Healthcare Partnership/Alliance, convened by SW Colorado AHEC. Both parties were instrumental in bringing together educators, community stakeholders, and healthcare employers to a single table. Their primary goal was to come up with innovative solutions that would expand the healthcare workforce. When local providers brought the issue of a shortage of medical assistants to the table, they worked together to build a Group Sponsored Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program, the first in Southwest Colorado! Their first apprentice, Shelby (highlighted below) completed the program and passed the national certification exam with a 97%.

Congratulations Shelby Giddings!

Shelby Giddings is the first graduate of the SW Colorado Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program. She is a new mom who had been working as a CNA and wanted to move up in a health-related career. Southwest Health Systems hired Shelby as a full time MA apprentice in the fall of 2017. In addition, she received financial assistance from the Colorado Workforce Center. Less than a year later, after completing the online educational component of the apprenticeship through US Careers Institute, Shelby passed her NHA (National Health Career Association) certification exam with a score of 97%, and is fully employed as a floating MA.

"I'm so thankful for the program and grateful that the SW Health and Colorado Workforce office in Cortez took a chance on me," stated Giddings.

Free SBIRT Training & TA Available
in SW Colorado

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based early intervention practice to prevent, identify, and reduce misuse of alcohol, marijuana, prescription, and illicit drugs. SBIRT is recommended by the CDC, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, American Academy of Pediatrics, SAMHSA, Veterans Administration, and others. As a program of Peer Assistance Services, Inc.(PAS), the goal of SBIRT in Colorado is to support screening as a standard of care throughout Colorado’s health and mental health care systems.

SBIRT in Colorado provides 2 to 3 hour in-person, no-cost SBIRT trainings focused on both adults and adolescents. The training is designed for healthcare and mental health professionals. The training includes: an overview of alcohol and drug use and health; screening as effective prevention; and role-play to practice motivational interviewing and brief intervention skills.

An online SBIRT training is available that can be used to supplement and enhance the in-person training. Ongoing technical assistance to all trainees. If you or your agency have interest, please contact Kevin Hughes at [email protected] or 303-369-0039 x213. Continuing Education Credits available for Nurses and Pharmacists.
