President Biden proclaimed Monday, Oct. 11, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, becoming the first U.S. president to formally recognize the day.
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our Nation celebrates the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations.
The contributions that Indigenous peoples have made throughout history — in public service, entrepreneurship, scholarship, the arts, and countless other fields — are integral to our Nation, our culture, and our society. Indigenous peoples have served, and continue to serve, in the United States Armed Forces with distinction and honor — at one of the highest rates of any group — defending our security every day. And Native Americans have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, working essential jobs and carrying us through our gravest moments. Further, in recognition that the pandemic has harmed Indigenous peoples at an alarming and disproportionate rate, Native communities have led the way in connecting people with vaccination, boasting some of the highest rates of any racial or ethnic group.

Did You Know?
Rural Americans are dying of COVID at twice the rate of those in urban areas. According to data from the Rural Health Policy Institute, mortality rates are accelerating in rural areas where vaccination rates tend to be lower. Contributing factors such as overall health status, limited access to health care, and healthcare staffing shortages cannot be ignored either for these communities. Nurses and other healthcare providers are burned out and either leaving local jobs for higher paying travel or temp agencies or quitting altogether. Although the fear that pending vaccine mandates will exacerbate the staffing issue, vaccinations are the most effective way to slow rural COVID deaths/

Our CHWs have been increasing access to vaccines and vaccine information through creative programming and education campaigns that target diverse community members. Additional ProgrammingThe HOPE Institute is a year-long health careers enrichment program for students interested in health careers. Presentations and related Hands-On activities will take place on the third Monday of every month from 6:00-7:30. DEA will hold the National Prescription Drug TakeBack (NTBI 21) on Saturday, October 23, 2021. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Unused expired, and unwanted medicines left in home cabinets are at risk for abuse, misuse, and theft. #SecureYourMeds while you’re at home during the #COVID19 pandemic.

Rheumatology in Primary Care
This ECHO series creates a virtual space where primary care providers and specialists can collaborate to increase access to care for patients with rheumatologic disease and promote awareness of the impact of rheumatologic disease on the health and wellness of patients in the primary medical home. The series will focus on early disease identification, efficient and effective evaluations, improved transitions of care for patients in need, and broaden the range of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions appropriate for the primary medical home. We will build connections between healthcare providers to maximize patient evaluation and to facilitate consultations and co-management.

The pandemic presented a historic challenge to Coloradans and their institutions — lost jobs and insurance, lack of access to health care, soaring needs for mental health support.
How did Coloradans meet the challenge? The 2021 Colorado Health Access Survey will have some answers. The every-other-year survey is the state's leading source of data on the systemic factors that influence health. This year, it will provide the first detailed look at the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Colorado.
