Welcome Dyllon Mills to the SWCAHEC Team!

Maykw (Ute Mountain Ute language for the word hello); Yá’át’ééh (Navajo language for the word hello)

I recently graduated from Fort Lewis College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Health. I am honored to introduce myself as the Community Health Programs Associate of Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center (SWCAHEC). This role is a significant responsibility, and I thank Kate Hartzell, the Executive Director of SWCAHEC, and fellow team members for the trust that they have placed in my ability to help develop and implement grants and contracts related to entry-level health careers, health professions educational support, and community health education in SW Colorado. I am excited about the future of our region’s AHEC Program and am committed to helping continue the impressive trajectory it has established over the past years.

As a young, capable, bright rowdy Indigenous individual from the lands of the Ute Mountain Utes of Colorado, I was the underserved student that many educational policies and equity programs targeted. I have never forgotten what it was like to be this young person needing these necessary supports throughout my academic career. Thus, I have dedicated my entry into the workforce to providing back to the community, and now, this role allows me to offer giving back at a regional level--Gosh, what a blessing!

I have administrational experience as the Vice-Chair of the Board for Kwiyagat Community Academy. As a stakeholder in education and representative of the Academy, I oversee its successful efforts in education from the startup phase to its second academic year serving the residents of the SW community. Here, I am privileged to participate in restoring the Towaoc community and repairing a buckskin of the community to wholeness, so once again, the community is a strong cradleboard able to wrap families in warmth and protection.

If you wish to connect, please stop by the SWCHEC offices at 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 320 Durango, CO 81301 or feel free to schedule a meeting online.

Join us at 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 25 to discover what we’ve learned about the need for culturally responsive health care in Colorado and how it’s associated with better health outcomes and more positive experiences with the health care system.

No two people have the same needs and experiences when they visit a doctor. Characteristics like language, cultural identity, sexual orientation, and previous experience with trauma can all shape a person’s health care needs. These barriers, combined with issues related to health literacy, contribute to health disparities such as poor general and mental health status.

Identifying and Treating Tremor, Parkinson's and Chorea

As our population ages, so does the prevalence of neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson’s Disease (PD), which is responsible for nearly three million disability adjusted life years globally and this has been increasing rapidly since the early 1990s. This series will introduce participants to quick exam techniques to assess tremor and rapidly narrow your differential diagnosis. You will also learn about treatment basics in PD and when to refer. The series will cover reliable recognition and differential diagnosis of chorea, including many medical and metabolic causes, and will highlight the most common genetic cause of chorea, Huntington’s Disease (HD), as well as effective new treatments for chorea. Case-based discussion will illustrate common psychiatric problems and treatments in those with PD and HD.
