Mercy to offer free, year-long diabetes prevention program


People at risk of developing type 2 diabetes are invited to join a free, year-long lifestyle change program being offered by Mercy Diabetes Education as part of Mercy Regional Medical Center’s participation in the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Participants will learn evidence-based skills that will help them follow a healthy lifestyle focused on nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, and coping with change-related challenges.

To be eligible for the program, which will tentatively begin in January 2019, participants must be 18 or older and meet at least one of the following criteria:
  • Be overweight or obese
  • Have been diagnosed with prediabetes
  • Have been previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes
  • Score a 5 or higher on the American Diabetes Association scoring tool
The program will be led by two of Mercy’s certified diabetes educators who, combined, have more than two decades of experience in nutrition counseling and diabetes education.

An information session for those interested in participating in the program will be held
on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Durango Public Library, 1900 E. Third Ave.

Dolores School-Based Health Clinic is now open!

The Four Corners Youth Clinics is located on the Middle/High School Campus at 1301 Central Avenue in Dolores offering integrated care.

A counselor is available to help with parenting tips for students or younger siblings, and lifestyle goal setting (ie. weight loss/gain; overcoming social anxiety, and more). Brief individual or family counseling services also offered. Well Child visits also offer Flouride varnish for children's teeth.


Dolores Clinic Hours: Monday 730-12:30, Tuesday 730-3:30, Wednesday 1-5. Can see anyone ages 0-5, and Dolores students/siblings age 6-21.

Starting in January, providers will be in Dolores Tues/Thurs from 8-4.

Free SBIRT Training & TA Available
in SW Colorado

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based early intervention practice to prevent, identify, and reduce misuse of alcohol, marijuana, prescription, and illicit drugs. SBIRT is recommended by the CDC, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, American Academy of Pediatrics, SAMHSA, Veterans Administration, and others. As a program of Peer Assistance Services, Inc.(PAS), the goal of SBIRT in Colorado is to support screening as a standard of care throughout Colorado’s health and mental health care systems.

SBIRT in Colorado provides 2 to 3 hour in-person, no-cost SBIRT trainings focused on both adults and adolescents. The training is designed for healthcare and mental health professionals. The training includes: an overview of alcohol and drug use and health; screening as effective prevention; and role-play to practice motivational interviewing and brief intervention skills.

An online SBIRT training is available that can be used to supplement and enhance the in-person training. Ongoing technical assistance to all trainees. HRSA Announces Two Geriatrics Funding Opportunities

Opportunity 1: Geriatrics Academic Career Award Program
(HRSA-19-007)

Fiscal Year 2019 Application Due Date: January 15, 2019

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is accepting applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2019 Geriatrics Academic Career Award Program (GACA). The purpose of the GACA Program is to support the career development of junior faculty in geriatrics at accredited schools of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, dentistry, pharmacy, or allied health.
GACA recipients develop the necessary skills to lead health care transformation in a variety of settings, including rural and/or medically underserved areas, to be age-friendly and to provide training in clinical geriatrics, including the training of interprofessional teams of healthcare professionals to provide healthcare for older adults.
GACA applicants are encouraged to address HHS and HRSA clinical priorities around substance and opioid use disorder, value-based care, and mental health.
Approximately $ 2,000,000 will be awarded to fund 26 grants. Applicants can apply for up to $75,000 per year.

Advanced Nursing Education Workforce Program (ANEW)

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is accepting applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2019 Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) Program. The purpose of this program is to support innovative academic-practice to educate primary care Nurse Practitioners (NP), clinical nurse specialists (CNS) and nurse midwives (NM) prepared for the unique challenges practicing in rural and underserved communities.
HRSA expects approximately $37,250,000 to fund approximately 53 recipients. You may apply for up to $700,000 per year, of which $350,000 may be used for student traineeships. In order to be eligible for an award, applicants must request both traineeships and academic-practice program infrastructure funds.

Opportunity 2: Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is accepting applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2019 Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP). The purpose of this cooperative agreement program is to establish and operate geriatrics education centers to develop a healthcare workforce that integrates geriatrics and primary care to improve health outcomes for older adults.
This program develops partnerships between academia, primary care, and community-based organizations to educate and train a workforce to provide value-based care for older adults.

Approximately $35,730,000 will be awarded to fund 47 cooperative agreements. Applicants can apply for up to $750,000 per year, which includes at least $100,000 for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) education and training.

Four Corners Child Advocacy Center is seeking a
full-time child & family advocate


The Child/Victim Advocate is responsible for promoting a child friendly, supportive environment at the Child Advocacy Center by providing crisis support, system information, and community resources for children and their families who participate in an investigation of child abuse or for children who have witnessed traumatic and violent crime.

Candidate must have experience working with children and families, have knowledge of child development and be familiar with local and state resources for child victims of abuse. Candidate preferred to possess either a Bachelor's degree in human services, psychology, sociology, education, or criminal justice (negotiable) and/or have extensive related work experience. Training will be provided upon hire, if needed.

$37,440-$40,000 dependent on experience. Insurance available after probation period.
