Pandemic Preparedness Response for Community Health Workers

Dr. Jennifer Lowell and April Sandman have been developing a Pandemic Preparedness Response curriculum for community health workers. They are currently piloting it to Fort Lewis College community health workers certificate students. This training provides basic information about infectious disease, how they spread, the importance of risk communication, and examples of response strategies during pandemics like COVID-19 and other public health emergencies. They will present information through differing cultural lenses and share experiences from local areas. This curriculum will be offered to community health workers in the Southwestern area in Spring of 2024. If you would more information, please contact April at april[email protected].

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Even though COVID-19 has not been with us for too long, we have learned much about the signs and symptoms caused by the virus. Unfortunately, many respiratory viruses circulate among humans causing similar symptoms. So, how do we tell the difference between COVID-19, Influenza, and the common cold?

This infographic is about the comparable symptoms between the common cold, flu, and COVID-19. Knowing the types of symptoms can help keep you and others safe. According to National Institutes of Health (NIH), these are common signs, but your symptoms may be more or less severe, or you may only have a few. If you feel sick, stay home and call your doctor to discuss how you're feeling and whether you need to get tested.
